What do you think about the sovereignty of God? Until I was 16, my family and I attended a church that talked a lot about man's free will. But then we began attending a church that focused heavily on God's sovereignty, and it did amazing things for my faith.
It wasn't that our first church didn't believe in the sovereignty of God, but rather it simply wasn't a focal point (at least, not that I remember, but I was also fairly young when we stopped going there). At our new church, however, the sovereignty of God permeated everything, and I began to understand more clearly how the Lord was in complete control of all things - how He was able to use even seemingly bad situations for His purposes.
Without getting into a debate on God's sovereignty versus man's free will, I do think that God's sovereignty is one of the most mind-boggling attributes of all time. That our Heavenly Father can use all things for His glory and our good is beyond amazing to me.
One of the clearest examples in Scripture is the story of Joseph. Although his brothers were in direct sin when they sold Joseph into slavery, Joseph boldly explains later on how God used that very despicable act to save many people from starvation during a famine (see Genesis 37-50).
God is in such control over all things that He isn't limited by man's sin and mistakes. Does that mean we shouldn't worry about not sinning because God can still use things for good? Of course not! There will still be consequences for sin. But I love serving a God who is so capable of being in charge that He is able to do all things, including using bad situations for His own purposes.
There are a lot of uncomfortable things in life, to put it mildly. But there is so much contentment in knowing that God is sovereign and is in control of all things at all times. His sovereignty leaves me all the more in awe of who He is!
Today's Assignment: Take some time and find other examples of God's sovereignty in Scripture. Are there any instances in your own life where you also see His sovereignty at work? Jot those down as well. Remembering these situations can do much to bolster your faith!
