We've almost completed our 31 Attributes of God series!  Today, is another astounding attribute:  He is unchangeable.  

I'm kind of an unemotional person for the most part.  I think my brother even once referred to me as stoic (though, admittedly, as I get older and experience more of life, I'm not nearly as stoic as I once was).  But even so, my mind, feelings, and emotions flip-flop often!  No one would describe me as unchangeable even if I am a little less given to wearing my feelings on my sleeve than others might be.

But God isn't like us.  He is unchangeable, unmoving.  He is steadfast and constant.  His Word is full of verses that show us how unchangeable He is:

  • Numbers 23:19 - "God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change his mind.  Has he said, and will He not do it?  Or has He spoken, and will he not fulfill it?" (ESV)
  • Malachi 3:6 - "For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob" (NKJV, emphasis added).
  • Hebrews 13:8 - "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (NKJV).

Because we are so wishy-washy and unsure of what we want or how we feel, we are all the more in need of a God who is unchangeable.  We need a God who is constant, who remains the same no matter what happens.  In the midst of our continued uncertainty, we can fully trust in our Heavenly Father's unchanging nature!

Today's Assignment:  Can you find any examples in Scripture of where God has changed His mind?  If so, does this mean that God didn't live up to His unchanging nature?  Why not?  (Hint:  This article from Answers in Genesis is a great place to start if you need help in understanding these weighty concepts.  There are other similar articles online as well that I found helpful.)
