We've talked about quite a few of God's attributes that demonstrate His magnificence - His awesomeness, His infiniteness, and His omniscience, to name a few.  Each of these attributes speak to His grandeur, power, and sovereignty.  They give us a sense of His largeness, if I can call it that.

But today, I want to talk about how, despite the fact that God can hold the entire world in His hands and that He orchestrates the workings of all creation, He is also a personal, intimate God.  He cares as much about each individual as He does the whole of the universe.

Although there isn't a specific verse in the Bible that reads, "God is a personal God," we know from some of His other attributes, such as His mercy, His grace, and His love, that He is, indeed, a caring, personal God.  He longs for a relationship with each and every one of us.  But the most clear example of His being a personal God is found in the Gospels, where He gave His one and only Son to die on our behalf so that we could spend Eternity in Heaven with Him.  What impersonal God would go to such great lengths?

One of the best passages that depicts God's personal love and care for us is found in Matthew 6:25-31.  It says,

"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble" (NKJV).

We serve a personal God who deeply loves and cares for us.  He sent His Son to die in our stead so that we might have everlasting life.  And He cares about the things we need.  Our God is a great, great God!

Today's Assignment:  Although Matthew 6:25-31 is likely a familiar passage, can you recite it from memory?  If not, hide it in your heart this week by writing it out and memorizing it completely.  These verses will bring great comfort whenever we're tempted to think that God doesn't hear us or isn't interested in our lives!
